Whats currently on my agenda

So today I had lunch with my youngest son at HuHot for Fathers Day. After I got home I started thinking about the various projects I have on my mind and one was to toss all the things I work on, that I ruminate about and let bounce off the walls of the appareantly spacious brain I ahve and see what sticks.

Something stuck. I had thought about a project that would run retro OS systems in a browser for historical purpouses, but also actually allow them to connect to a running proxy. I got bored after two VMs adn wondered "who the fuck cares about this?"

But then in the jumble that is my brain came this GREAT idea for a game (that also turned into a GREAT idea for a future novel for me) but it wasn't really about the game. It was about a federated terminal game network — an open protocol and reference implementation that allows independently operated nodes to host terminal-based multiplayer games with shared state, cross-node player identity, and synchronized gameplay across the network.

THAT sounded interesting and like soemthing I can get into and possibly find other systems or retro gamers intereted in it. So... it's in the planning stage right now. Unfortunately (well maybe not unfortunately, but as a side diversion) I needed a game as the catlyst for the network. Chicken and egg thing as it were. And I came up up with a semi-brilliant (ok a mostly plagerized) idea for a game that follows the lead of the classic Legend of the Red Dragon, but is more Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" meets Douglas Adams "Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy." I could totally get into that. BUT... I have to check myself because the game is not THE PRODUCT, the federated network is. But the game is rabbit hole that going to tune into a novel, I guar-own-tee!

So thats going to be my occupier for a while now. But it is getting late, I have to work my dull day job tomorrow, so I better close for tonight!

OH! and I got tickets to see RUSH in October at Ball Center, in Denveer CO! Yes me! Fourth time seeing Rush in my lifetime! First was 1983!! I will miss Neil not being there but the videos have proven that Anika Nilles is MORE than capable of taking over for Neil. And Alex and Geddy look like they are have fun!!!

My first blog post on Offgrid Holdout.

June 21, 2026 — John Smith

So yeah, this will be short. I'm still working on features, sorting out bugs, making the rounds on small web, online communities for people interested in yet another pubnix, although this one is not so much geard at gain a lot of user as it is for being smaller and having a tighter know group of members (who I am calling "Holdouts") The goal is to have very few "lurkers" here and actually people interested in a small community...a place for them to build in their own corner of the internet without the burden of corporations, ads, algorhithms, fess and social media crap like likes, karma, up/down votes. So, more to come. As of this post we have a whopping three users (including myself) and looking for more that will want to actually participate.
