This page explains how Offgrid Holdout is built, where it lives, and what keeps it running. I enjoy knowing what’s behind other people’s websites, so here’s a look behind mine.

The site
Offgrid Holdout runs on PureBlog. I chose it because I like its simplicity and built-in features. It helps me focus on writing instead of being a sysadmin.
The design uses my own custom CSS theme, with modifications to the layout of posts and notes and a custom “Listening” feature connected to my self-hosted Navidrome server. My aim is to keep the site readable, easy to navigate, and personal enough that it feels like somewhere I actually live online.
Hosting and domain
The site is hosted with Contabo, running on Debian 13 Linux.
The domain, offgridholdout.org, is registered through Namecheap. deSEC handles DNS.
Writing and publishing
I write my posts in Obsidian, using a mix of Markdown and HTML. From there, I copy and paste my finished posts into PureBlog and either publish them immediately or schedule them for later.
I use AI mainly to help catch typos, spelling mistakes, punctuation issues, and grammatical errors in my writing. I also use it to help with site updates and routine maintenance.
Privacy and analytics
I use GoatCounter for basic analytics, including page views and country-level visitor information. Session tracking is also enabled to distinguish unique visitors over periods of up to eight hours.
Collection of referrers, browser and operating system information, screen sizes, regions, and languages is disabled. Storage of individual pageviews for export is also disabled.
The site uses no cookies and has no ads, affiliate links, or other forms of monetization.
Feeds and connections
You can follow new posts through the site’s RSS feed.
Maintenance
I back up the site regularly using restic.
If you find a broken link or something that doesn’t work, you can reach me at calvusrex@offgridholdout.org.
Acknowledgments
Thanks to Kev Quirk for his very awesome PureBlog software, Contabo for stable, reliable, low-cost VPS hosting, and coffee for keeping me on track!
